ARTIST I CINEMATOGRAPHER I DIRECTOR
Ritam Sarkar (b. Kolkata) is a time-based artist, cinematographer, and director working across film, photography, installation, and live performance. A graduate of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kolkata, his practice spans fiction, documentary, and experimental forms, often exploring collective memory, vulnerability, and the poetics of resistance.
Sarkar’s practice moves fluidly between cinema, theatre, and visual art — from the award-winning Junk-e (Nagari Short Film Competition 2023, Jury Commendation; ALT EFF 2024, Best Indian Short Film) to immersive installations like Soundcheck (with UK-based artist Lewis Khan). He has also collaborated on theatre and interdisciplinary performance, notably with filmmaker Suman Mukhopadhyay on his multidisciplinary theatre project.
His works have been exhibited internationally, including The Soul of India (Festival Internacional de Fotografia de Avintes, Portugal, 2018) and LensCulture Critics’ Choice 2020 (curated by Charlotte Cotton), and featured in National Geographic Your Shot and Better Photography. He also contributed to the photobook Cidades Vazias com Gente Dentro (Vol. II).
