TEACHING WITH NAGARI
PROFESSIONAL
Working Professionals:
Architecture, Urban Designers, Urban Planners
Policymakers, Municipalities and City Administrators
“Nagari films inherently reflect urban India’s current lived realities, and the issues addressed are complex and interconnected.
Local and state-level workers, while aware of the statistical information, lack adequate resources in understanding the ground-level experience of our current urban realities, which would better equip them to address and tackle the emerging issues.”
This Module uses Nagari films as a tool for learning and discussion among local policymakers, municipal officials, city administrators and urban practitioners. The films explore the lived realities of urban India and create space to examine how urban policies and systems are experienced on the ground.
The module brings together urban practitioners, researchers and subject experts to discuss issues such as mobility, housing, public space, tourism, climate and urban governance. Screenings and facilitated discussions help professionals connect these stories to their own work and explore different perspectives on urban issues.
It also explores how Nagari films can support professional learning and capacity building within existing programmes and training. By connecting films with relevant themes, practitioners and organisations, it creates opportunities for more grounded and accessible conversations about cities.
OBJECTIVES
To sensitise and bring forth interdisciplinary discussions regarding policymaking and its implementation.
To use the films as a case study to acknowledge and evaluate existing problems and policies.
Reflect on socio-political factors shaping city morphology at a micro scale to build equitable and accessible cities.
Strategise on how to incorporate different social and economic groups into processes of public policy and its implementation.
1. Approaching Organisations
Reaching out to organisations based on the alignment between Nagari films and their ongoing work, and identifying where they could benefit from using Nagari films as part of their programmes.
2. Nagari Films Screenings
Introducing organisations to selected Nagari films based on thematic alignment, and exploring the multifaceted layers of the films and how they can be used most effectively
3. Hosting Public Forums
Bringing together practitioners, experts and filmmakers around the organisation’s chosen theme, screening the films and facilitating a closed-door discussion that connects the stories in the films with practitioners’ experiences, challenges and ongoing work.
4. Creating Resources
Building on the conversations that emerge from these forums by documenting and disseminating them through forum summaries on the website or through podcasts with invited experts.
5. Co-create a Plan to Embed Nagari films
Integrating selected Nagari films into the organisation’s existing training, capacity-building or professional learning programmes.
